Brazil: At least 169 dead and more than 600,000 people displaced in widespread flooding in the state of Rio Grande do Sul. Considerable material damage: roads, bridges and homes etc. destroyed.
Germany: Knife attack in Mannheim 31 May, in which a police officer was killed and 5 people were injured during an “anti-islam” rally on Marktplatz. Counter-terrorism investigation opened.
Papua New Guinea: Landslide in Enga Province 24 May following heavy rain, at least 2,000 people buried according to the authorities. Major destruction of roads and homes.
Georgia: Growing protest movement against a bill passed in parliament on “foreign agents”. Thousands of demonstrators in the streets of Tbilisi. Clashes and arrests reported on the fringes of the rallies.
