Israel/Iran: launch of Israel’s Operation Rising Lion military offensive on Iran 13 June, resulting in the bombing of over 1,100 military sites, 8 nuclear sites and 300 missiles launch pads, with an estimated death toll of over 900, including a majority of civilians and high-ranking representatives of the Islamic Republic; ceasefire imposed by the US 24 June following brief involvement in the conflict in the form of air strikes on the nuclear sites of Fordo, Natanz and Ispahan 22 June. The Iranian response consisted mainly of daily missile attacks on Israel, particularly Tel Aviv, Haifa and Be’er Sheva (28 dead) and an attack on the US military base at al-Udeid (Qatar).

Thailand: renewed tension with Cambodia following an armed skirmish at the border 28 May, in which a Cambodian soldier was killed. Several border crossings closed and other travel restrictions imposed, including on the movement of goods. Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra suspended by the Constitutional Court 1 July in the wake of a leaked controversial telephone call with former Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen.

United States: clashes between demonstrators opposed to federal immigration policies and the police in Los Angeles, after the Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agency carried out a series of arrests in several neighbourhoods of the city, which resulted in increased security on an unprecedented scale. In response, tension and incidents were reported on the fringes of national “No Kings” anti-Trump mass demonstrations.
