Europe: Season of large-scale wildfires, notably in France (massive fires in Gironde and Fontainebleau), Spain (state of emergency declared over wildfires in Ávila and Madrid; 13 fatalities in Los Gallardos), Greece (national red alert) and Portugal (on alert).
Persian Gulf: Renewed open conflict from 7/07, with US air strikes in southern and south-western Iran (maritime areas around the Strait of Hormuz) and Iranian retaliatory strikes against US interests, mainly in Bahrain, Jordan, Iraq and Kuwait. Unprecedented drone strikes on the port of Damietta (Egypt) on 29/07. Renewed tension between Yemeni Houthis and Saudi Arabia, targeted by several attacks (Abha, Jizan and Yanbu, 13/07 to 25/07).
Japan: Kumamoto region (Kyushu Island) struck by a magnitude 7.1 earthquake on 28/07, causing at least 36 deaths and widespread damage. Tsunami warning since lifted.
Mali: GSIM and FLA launched an offensive on 4/07, simultaneously targeting Gao, Sévaré, Konna and Kéniéroba prison, with fighting concentrated around Anéfis (Kidal region), recaptured by the Malian army on 13/07 (30 dead). Fighting continued throughout the month.
Syria: At least 10 people killed in a bomb attack at a café in central Damascus on 2/07, followed by a further bombing on 7/07 that killed one person and injured 36.
