First reported 15 May in Ituri province (DRC), the Ebola outbreak caused by the Bundibugyo variant was declared a public health emergency of international concern by the WHO 17 May. To date, there have been at least 750 suspected cases and 177 deaths in the DRC, as well as two confirmed imported cases in Kampala (Uganda). In response, Uganda has closed its border with the DRC to passengers and Rwanda has closed border crossings, whilst other neighbouring countries have stepped up their screening and surveillance measures to prevent the spread of the virus.
