Bangladesh : Violent student demonstrations from 1 July in demand of a reform of the quota-based recruitment system for government jobs. Security stepped up (curfew, internet shut down etc.), at least 205 dead in clashes between demonstrators and police.
Caribbean : Hurricane Beryl (28 june to 12 July) swept across the Caribbean, Mexico and the US. Destruction caused by the storm in the Caribbean. Hurricane Beryl was the earliest Category 5 storm ever to form. 90% of Saint Vincent and the Grenadines destroyed.
Venezuela : President Nicolas Maduro re-elected for a third term in office with 51.2% of the vote 28 July. Results contested by the opposition and a number of countries, condemning fraud. Strong crackdown on demonstrations across the country, notably with the use of live rounds, at least 12 dead.
World : Global Microsoft outage affecting a large number of companies and establishments (banks, stock markets, hospitals, transport and telecommunications networks, the media). Severe disruption in airports worldwide.
United States : Shooting targets former President Donald Trump during a campaign rally in Butler, Pennsylvania 13 July.
Middle East : Rocket attack attributed to Lebanon’s Hezbollah on the town of Majdal Shams, in the Golan Heights 27 July, 12 dead. Israeli retaliation in the form of strikes on southern Lebanon 28 and 29 July, as well as on south Beirut 30 July. Hamas political leader, Ismail Haniyeh, assassinated in Tehran in a suspected Israeli strike. Heightened tension.
